The Lithium Ion Battery marketplace is moving at ever faster speeds. Perlmutter & Idea Development (P&ID) has been keeping up with papers, presentations, videos, new projects and meetings. Phew, I am tired just thinking about the past months.
What P&ID’s Been Up To
First, our white paper, “Selection of Process Drying Technology for Maximum Black Mass and Electrolyte Recovery,” appeared in the UK’s Battery Energy Storage Technology magazine. The paper discusses drying processes as fundamental in chemical process engineering for solids handling. The term “drying” usually refers to the thermal removal of a liquid from a solid product. After mechanical shredding of the lithium-ion battery, process vacuum drying is critical for maximum black mass and other solids recovery and electrolyte recovery.
Following from the white paper, on 17 – 20 March 2025, I had the opportunity to chair a session and present on Methods of Recycling at the International Battery Seminar. The presentation expanded on my published discussion to include Dryer technologies, surrounding ancillary equipment, installation, safety, reliability and troubleshooting. These topics are also highlighted on my website, Lithium & Battery Materials and in my column in Chemical Processing, Barry on Batteries.
Finally, to bring a focus to this work, THE P&ID MINUTE has a new video illustrating the complex, multi-step recycling process that transforms end-of-life batteries, production scrap, and defective cells into valuable recoverable materials.
Enabling Cross-Disciplinary Work Worldwide
The opportunities I’ve already enjoyed this year have made one thing abundantly clear. In lithium and metals production, battery materials, cell manufacturing and recycling market, a rapid proliferation of technological advances is enabling cross-disciplinary work worldwide.
Companies in this industry need “Key-Shaped” engineers who have several areas of expertise with varying degrees of depth. P&ID is a “Key-Shaped” consulting company merging engineering and supply-chain management experience. We work to align suppliers and process technologies to de-risk your scaleup for successful and cost-effective projects.
If you missed any of these conferences or want to discuss your ideas, contact me. We can schedule “Lunch & Learn” seminars and training. Let us get more efficient in the Lithium Ion Battery marketplace together.
