From Revex News
“P&ID helped design and deliver an overall turnkey system approach for Revex’s full-scale facility generating battery-quality material in a cost-efficient manner,” said Barry Perlmutter, CEO of P&ID. “P&ID has over 40 years of experience in process filtration, process drying, and solids material handling to fully integrate and optimize Revex’s battery material recycling plant.”
P&ID developed an integrated and holistic approach for maximum recovery with maximum efficiency, addressing key aspects of the recycling process:
- Production scrap and the EV battery first must be mechanically shredded and undergo size reduction for safe, reliable handling.
- Drying of the black mass must produce a consistent powder to have the maximum recovery of lithium, manganese, cobalt, and nickel.
- Physical separation and sorting require several steps of screening, zig-zag sifters, milling and dedusting. Each step must be integrated for reproducible fractions with maximum recovery.
- In the final step, refining produces recyclable material.
“Revex is pleased with the work conducted by P&ID in the design of Revex’s battery materials recycling plant”, said Mike Cleveland, COO of Revex. “P&ID has helped position our company for commercial success utilizing sustainable technologies that will create domestic critical mineral solutions for energy transition.”
Revex is aggressively pursuing the launch of its critical mineral processing facilities utilizing reclaimed mine waste and recycled batteries. The use of secondary and unconventional sources, and recycling, will help meet future mineral demand for electric vehicles.
The Li-ion battery and EV industry face challenges in domestic critical mineral extraction and material availability. End-of-life lithium-ion batteries contain recyclable metals like nickel, lithium, and cobalt, allowing for their recovery and reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.
“We will utilize these waste materials to first create green nickel concentrate and black mass. It’s a circular solution that reduces use of virgin material supply and integrates upstream extraction with midstream processing and downstream recovery and recycling”, said John Rockwell, CEO of Revex. Revex plans to start construction in 2024 of its Michigan-based mine tailings waste reclamation facility and lithium-ion battery materials recovery plant.
About Revex and Battery Recycling
About Revex Technologies: Revex Technologies will be a leader in sustainable production of nickel and other critical minerals, essential for the clean energy transition. Our proprietary processing capability, leveraging flexible feedstocks including ore concentrate, mine tailings (waste), and recovered Li-Ion battery materials addresses a domestic supply chain vulnerability by establishing a low-emission and scalable domestic solution for refining of critical minerals. We are partnering with the primary industry of mining to integrate upstream extraction, midstream processing, and downstream recovery & recycling. Revex is reshaping the critical minerals economy.
